Real Philly History, Real Fast

Jim Murphy's book, Real Philly History, Real Fast, captures the essence of Philadelphia's rich history through 51 concise stories, each no longer than four pages. Inspired by his experience writing for the Society Hill Reporter, Murphy honed his ability to write tight, engaging narratives packed with fast facts, similar to the style of USA Today.

The book was born out of Murphy's curiosity and discovery that much of what he learned about Philadelphia as a child was incomplete or incorrect. He highlights how William Penn's vision for a "holy experiment"—a city welcoming all religions without taxation—contrasted with the reality of a "howling wilderness" he had to transform. Murphy also delves into the pivotal roles of two Philadelphia icons: William Penn, who laid the city's foundation, and Benjamin Franklin, who elevated it through innovation and civic improvements.

Written in Murphy's late 70s, the book reflects his passion for storytelling and his deep connection to the city. Whether you're a history buff or a visitor, Murphy's work offers an accessible and engaging way to explore the remarkable legacy of Philadelphia.
