John Weber: I'm John Weber, and this is your WHYY Philly Phun Phact. Take a walk along Penn's Landing, and you're sure to run into a four-masted sailing ship that's docked there. That would be the Moshulu.

Jim Murphy: Moshulu was built in 1904 Scotland and was originally named Kurt and was a cargo ship under the German fleet. Later, the name was changed to Dreadnought, and when the ship was seized by the US at the onset of World War I, it was renamed to Moshulu, meaning one who fears nothing in the Seneca language.

John Weber: That's tour guide Jim Murphy, author of Real Philly History, Real Fast, who says that Moshulu was in various private hands in San Francisco through the nineteen twenties.

Jim Murphy: While in Norway in 1940, Moshulu was seized by Germany. After the war, the ship was returned to Norway, and it wasn't until 1975 that Moshulu made its way to Philadelphia and was turned into a floating restaurant.
