Reading Terminal Market
Even though New York City started 58 years before Philadelphia – until recent years it didn’t have a great food market. Realizing this, then-New York Times food writer Mark Bittman looked lovingly 80 miles south to the Reading Terminal Market in 2013 and referred to it as “the grandest market ‘we’ have.”
Noting that the Big Apple didn’t have a central market, he wrote: “We can find groovy retail just about anywhere, but to find a really fantastic indoor food market, we have to go to Philly.”
That’s still good advice. In 2022, Reading Terminal Market was named Best Public Market by USA Today 10 Best Readers’ Choice Awards for the second year in a row. In 2014 the market was also named One of 10 Great Public Spaces in America. If you haven’t been to the market lately, head on over. It’s a fabulous as ever.
