Penn’s Landing

The Landing of William Penn by Thomas Birch (c. 1850).

If you believe William Penn’s first landing in Pennsylvania was at his beloved city of Philadelphia, you’re wrong.

The Delaware County Historical Society (DCHS) emphasizes this point on its website, www.padelcohistory.org.

Penn first landed in present-day Chester (then called Upland). After handling administrative duties there, he moved upriver to Philadelphia. DCHS says the city of Philadelphia purchased the right to use the name “Penn’s Landing.”

Of course, Penn’s first landing in America was in New Castle, Delaware, reportedly on Oct. 27, 1682.
